Nick Pope is a professional footballer who plays for Newcastle United.
The summer of 2022 was a transformative one for Newcastle United as it was the first summer transfer window in which they had PIF money to spend.
Though Eddie Howe didn’t go as wild in the market as expected – just like he didn’t in the previous January, either – Newcastle did start to bring serious talent to the club.
Alexander Isak was signed for a massive fee and is now one of the best strikers in the world and Sven Botman was recruited from Lille.
A cheaper signing but one that has been just as crucial was that of Nick Pope and here is everything you need to know about him.

Who is Nick Pope?
Nicholas David Pope is a goalkeeper for Newcastle United.
He started his career with the club he grew up supporting, Ipswich Town, but his path to the top would be a winding one through non-league after being released.
Pope joined Bury Town as a youngster but his talent was soon spotted by Charlton Athletic, who picked him up in 2011.
Multiple loans throughout the EFL would follow before he broke into the first team as a regular, at which point Burnley swooped in.
Pope again had to wait for his chance but shone in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season after taking Tom Heaton’s place, but a shoulder injury ruled him out for most of the next season.
Upon his return from injury, he went straight back in as No.1 and soon became regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest shot-stoppers and kept 15 clean sheets in the 2019-20 season.
Pope could not save Burnley from relegation in 2022 but he was given an instant return to the top flight when Newcastle signed him.
The goalkeeper has been reliable for Howe’s side ever since, though his foolish red card for handling the ball out of the box meant he missed the 2023 Carabao Cup final.
He made amends two years later, though, by keeping Liverpool at bay as Newcastle finally won the trophy.
How old is Nick Pope?
Pope was born on April 19, 1992, in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England. As of October 2025, he is 33 years old.
Though he is reaching the final years of his career, goalkeepers can play for much longer than outfielders and he could yet get even better.
How tall is Nick Pope?
Pope stands at a towering 6’6″ tall, making him the joint-second tallest player in the squad behind only Dan Burn.
His lanky frame allows him to jump above challenging attackers to claim crosses into the box.
What number does Pope wear for Newcastle?
Pope wears the No.1 shirt at St. James’ Park, having swapped to the number in the summer of 2025.
The goalkeeper initially wore No.22 for his first three years at the club but finally got his hands on the coveted No.1 after Martin Dubravka’s departure.
How much does Nick Pope earn?
Pope reportedly earns a wage of £60,000 a week at Newcastle, equalling £3.12m over a year.
That puts him in the midrange of Newcastle’s earners and he’s contracted until 2027.
How much did Newcastle United pay for Nick Pope?
Newcastle paid £10m to sign Pope from Burnley in the summer of 2022.
It has proven to be a bargain transfer, with Pope being a steady and reliable presence in goal.
