Newcastle United are interested in Giorgio Scalvini as they hunt for a new central defender.
Indeed, Newcastle United want to sign a new centre-back this summer, having failed in their pursuit of Marc Guehi last year.
Guehi is still a Newcastle target but has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool.
Newcastle are interested in Ousmane Diomande too, though the Sporting CP defender has been touted as Guehi’s potential replacement at Crystal Palace.
Scalvini is one of Newcastle’s main targets this summer but they are likely to face competition for the Atalanta defender.

Newcastle United could be set for transfer ‘curve ball’
The Daily Telegraph journalist took to social media platform X on Monday night.
He revealed that Newcastle remain interested in Scalvini but are yet to make an official offer.
Edwards also added that he was of the belief that fans could be set for a ‘curve ball’ when it comes to signing a new defender this summer.
That is particularly interesting because Newcastle staff are pleased that the names of their targets are yet to have emerged in the media.

At long last, Newcastle are set to sign a first-team player.
Indeed, Anthony Elanga is set to sign for Newcastle, after the club agreed an initial £55million fee with Nottingham Forest for the Sweden international.
After that, the defence has to be looked at. The likes of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn were brilliant last season but they are both 33 now, and surely cannot go on forever.
Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman offer depth but the pair missed most of last season through injury.
With that in mind, a defensive signing has to be next on the agenda after Elanga completes his move to St James’ Park.
