Former Newcastle United men are picking up the pieces following their departures in the summer.
The club decided to release five Newcastle men following the expiry of their contracts. Most of them have found new clubs.
Matt Ritchie returned to Portsmouth following a seven-year stint on Tyneside, he’s made 19 appearances in the Championship so far this season. A forgotten man, Lewis Cass signed for Cambridge United soon after his departure.
Most recently, Loris Karius looks set to join Schalke 04 who now play in the 2. Bundesliga following crippling financial issues.
Former Newcastle man Jeff Hendrick is the only player without a club after six months. The 32-year-old only played once under Toon boss Eddie Howe – an appearance off the bench in a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in 2021.
Now, another Newcastle man has found a new club after his summer departure. His second club since leaving – only this time, he’s joining up with one of his former teammates.

Paul Dummett joins Mike Williamson manager Carlisle United
Paul Dummett left Newcastle in the summer after 23 years on Tyneside. The 33-year-old made 213 appearances for the Magpies under the likes of Alan Pardew, Rafael Benitez and Eddie Howe.
Dummett joined League One side Wigan in November, his first club since the release. Things didn’t go to plan, however, and the Geordie left the club in January after making just five appearances in all competitions.
Now, it was announced on Friday that Dummett has joined League Two side Carlisle United until the end of the season.
He’ll link up with another former Newcastle man at the club – Mike Williamson took the Carlisle job in September following spells at MK Dons and the Magpies local neighbours Gateshead.
It hasn’t been the best of starts for Williamson at Carlisle, the Cumbrians sit rock bottom of League Two, six points from safety.
Williamson will be keen for Dummett to hit the ground running and give his side all the impetus they need to dig themselves out of the huge hole they’ve got themselves in.
Isaac Hayden departs Newcastle on loan
Newcastle made their first move in the January transfer window – sadly for Toon fans, it wasn’t an arrival. Portsmouth confirmed the signing of Isaac Hayden on loan until the end of the season.
Hayden hasn’t played for Newcastle since 2021 and was originally tipped to mutually terminate his deal in January. With his contract now up until 2026, the club must come to an agreement over his future after his loan to the South Coast.
It’s Hayden’s fourth loan since 2022, he’s now had spells at Norwich, Standard Liege and QPR before making the move to Portsmouth.
The 29-year-old recently received his first call-up to the Jamaican national team under former Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren.
