Newcastle United now seen as most likely club to sign star still haunted by infamous miss as the world watched on

Newcastle United could still make an eye-catching signing this summer in the form of Randal Kolo Muani.

Indeed, Newcastle have been linked with Kolo Muani as they look to strengthen their frontline all while keeping Alexander Isak

Isak isn’t for sale at Newcastle despite links with Liverpool and Al Hilal, and Eddie Howe needs to bolster his striking options alongside the superstar Swede.

Callum Wilson’s departure leaves the Newcastle United squad even weaker than it was last season.

As such, Newcastle have gone big in their pursuit of a new forward. They’ve looked to sign both Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, though lost out to Chelsea and Liverpool respectively.

Still, Kolo Muani could well be another option.

Newcastle United could sign Randal Kolo Muani this summer

According to journalist Duncan Castles, Newcastle are looking like the most likely destination for the 26-year-old forward.

He joined Juventus on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2025, but that stint ended after the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

Manchester United have also been interested in the striker, who scored ten goals in 22 games for the Italian giants.

Still, a move to St James’ Park is considered the most likely outcome at this stage.

“Unsurprisingly there’s interest from England because there’s been interest from England in Kolo Muani for years,” said Castles on The Transfers Podcast.

“He went to PSG ahead of interest from clubs including Manchester United. What I’m hearing from the French end is that there’s been enquiries from Manchester United about his availability, but I don’t think they are as advanced as they are with other clubs.

“Newcastle United are involved in this conversation and I think at present it looks like they are the most likely destination for Kolo Muani.”

What Randal Kolo Muani said about his infamous miss in the 2022 World Cup final

While perhaps unfair for a player of his stature, Kolo Muani is probably best known for his miss for France in the 2022 World Cup final.

With the score at 3-3 heading into a penalty shootout in Qatar, the ball fell to Kolo Muani in the final seconds of the game.

He, however, did not spot the run of Kylian Mbappe alongside him and opted to try and shoot past Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Martinez famously saved the effort and his country went on to win the World Cup on penalties.

Speaking about that miss, Kolo Muani told beIN Sports: “I still watch it, I know it off by heart.

“In my head, I said to myself – Randal, you have to shoot now. I tried to shoot towards the near post but the goalkeeper made a very good save. But there were other options.

“I could have lobbed him, or find Kylian Mbappe. But in the moment, I didn’t see him. It’s only when you watch back that you discover the other options.

“It’s too late. It still sticks in my throat and it’ll be there for life.”
