Newcastle United’s interest in Dominik Szoboszlai is intensifying with latest rumours suggesting PIF have made him a top target.
If the rumours are true about Newcastle making Dominik Szoboszlai a top target this summer then the Magpies could be about to make one of the signings of the season.
The 22-year-old Hungarian international has garnered a lot of praise for his ability and PlanetFootball have gathered some of the best in one article.
Szoboszlai currently plays for RB Leipzig
His national coach, Marco Rossi said in 2020: “Szoboszlai is a midfielder who makes assists and scores goals. He can play centre midfielder or behind the main striker. At Juventus, he would be ideal as a back-up to Aaron Ramsey. We are talking about one of the top ten talents in Europe.”
Fortunately for Newcastle, Szoboszlai never made the move to Juventus and instead made the classic Red Bull switcheroo moving from RB Salzburg to RB Leipzig where he continues to impress.
I say fortunately as my feeling is that it would be much harder to tempt him away from Juventus than it will be from RB Leipzig and I really, really hope we can tempt him to move to Newcastle.
“A lot of people say that my style of play is close to Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Toni Kroos. It is a great thing to hear that,” Szoboszlai told Goal in 2019. A hybrid of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Toni Kroos in the Newcastle midfield? That would only have been a wild dream not so long ago, now we have the chance to make it happen.
Newcastle would make Szoboszlai one of their top earners
Newcastle are reportedly set to offer Szoboszlai £10million a year which would make him one of the highest earners at the club, but he would be totally worth it.
Szoboszlai is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet and can turn defenders inside out with ease. However, he’s also got fantastic passing range and can pick players out from all over the park. Think prime Jonjo Shelvey but more consistent.
For our (hopefully) Champions League assault next season, Szoboszlai is perfect. His versatility would give Eddie Howe a lot more options as squad rotation will be a key factor in any success Newcastle may have next term, and if you have players who can slot into various positions easily, the fewer players Howe will need to bring in.
The fewer players we need, the more we can spend on the ones we do get in which means we should be able to buy quality over quantity this summer and Szoboszlai is certainly quality.
