Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie during the January transfer window.
Indeed, Methalie is one of Newcastle United’s leading transfer targets in January and an approach to the French club was reportedly expected.
Eddie Howe could certainly do with strengthening Newcastle United’s full-back options, given injuries to Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento severely impact his team’s performances.
If you could sign ONE Premier League player this month – who would it be?
Still, Methalie has undergone knee surgery at Toulouse to cure chronic pain and while it’s not thought to be serious, it could derail Newcastle’s plans during the January transfer window.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Newcastle United transfer news and rumours.
Dayann Methalie injury could delay Newcastle United move
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle must reassess the situation before making a move to sign the 19-year-old.
Though a January move isn’t completely ruled out, it is something to consider.
Toulouse boss Carles Martinez Novell has suggested the defender is facing “several weeks” out of action.
That could, in turn hold up a potential move to St James’ Park.
Would you rather Newcastle sign a ready-made No.1 or a young project player?
Eddie Howe‘s honest admission about Newcastle United’s January transfer budget
There were plenty of interesting tidbits to have emerged from Howe’s press conference on Friday ahead of the Crystal Palace.
Largely, the focus was on the likes of Tino Livramento, Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman potentially returning from injury.
However, when asked about the budget he’s playing with this month amid reports that Newcastle have £100million to spend in January, Howe claimed the funds to make a “marquee” signing weren’t available.
The Newcastle United manager said: “‘Marquee signing’, I don’t know quite what that means.
“I suppose you’re taking big financial outlay?
“I don’t think that’s the desire in this month for various reasons, because I don’t think it’s a great month necessarily to make that kind of signing.
Our first CONFIRMED deal of 2026! How badly does our loan system need a revamp, by the way?! 😡
“Any signing that we do make in this window will restrict our ability to do business in the summer, so I think we’ve got to be really careful that we make the right decisions for the here and now and for the future.
“We’re still in that position where PSR will influence every decision that we make, so that’s where we have to be really smart.
“I don’t think that’s necessarily the wish in this month, but I think our injury situation to a degree will impact what we do and don’t do.”

Sandro Tonali to Juventus latest
Sandro Tonali’s long-term future at Newcastle United was cast into doubt when he revealed that he didn’t want to start proclaiming he’d stay at the club forever.
That was understandable and, frankly, refreshingly honest following the Alexander Isak saga.
Tonali has been linked with a move to Juventus, although quite how they afford a deal is difficult to see right now.
However, according to Tuttomercatoweb, Tonali remains their primary target and a courtship is underway.
