Newcastle United immediately respond to Paul Mitchell’s plea and approach £15m attacker

Paul Mitchell has stated that Newcastle United need to broaden their recruitment horizons, and that could already be happening.

The Magpies endured a pretty miserable summer transfer window, with no major signings arriving at St James’ Park.

Alan Shearer has criticised Newcastle’s transfer activity, while Paul Mitchell has since come out and addressed the media over what went on.

Mitchell still believes Newcastle are good enough to qualify for Europe, and refused to overspend on players just for the sake of it. He also stated that Newcastle need to cast their net wider if they are going to find proper value in the transfer market.

What Paul Mitchell has said about Newcastle’s scouting

“Should our scouting and recruitment be driven more extensively with a wider reaching net?” he asked the Telegraph.

“It definitely should be because this is becoming a really nuanced space now, when you just can’t capitally fund everything every year, buying loads of players at peak age and peak price.

“That’s the responsibility of me, the scouting team, the recruitment team and Eddie.”

Newcastle interested in Kevin Zenon

The Magpies could already be addressing Mitchell’s concern, as a report from Argentina has stated that Newcastle United are interested in one of Boca Juniors’ most exciting attackers.

According to LT10, Newcastle United want to sign Kevin Zenon from Boca Juniors.

They report that Boca value the 23-year-old at £15million, and that Newcastle have made enquiries about the talented winger.

LT10 add that whatever fee Boca receive for Zenon, 20% of it will go to his former club Union Santa Fe.

Newcastle failed to sign a winger in the summer

Zenon is a player that Newcastle have been linked with in the past, and this fresh interest comes after the Magpies were unable to sign a winger in the summer.

Newcastle failed with a late bid for Anthony Elanga, with Nottingham Forest unwilling to sell the Sweden international.

It is a position that needs addressing, and Zenon is an interesting option. He would be much cheaper than someone like Elanga, who Newcastle were reportedly willing to pay £50million for.

Zenon is left-footed, but primarily plays on the left. In contrast, Howe needs someone who can play on the right. Whether they feel Zenon could do a job on that flank remains to be seen.

Newcastle are also interested in Zenon’s Olympic teammate

Zenon represented Argentina Under-23s at the recent Olympics in Paris. They made it to the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by France.

Interestingly, the Magpies have also been linked with signing one of Zenon’s Olympic teammates, Santiago Hezze.

It was reported last month that Newcastle want to sign Santiago Hezze from Olympiacos, with the 22-year-old midfielder seen as a project player like Will Osula.

Paul Mitchell has his eyes on the South American market, and it will be interesting to see if the club taps into it in the near future. That could be where Newcastle find the best value, as they aim to avoid paying premium prices for readymade stars.
