Newcastle United hit by new Yoane Wissa blow, he might cost too much money now

The Yoane Wissa to Newcastle United deal has taken a turn for the worse.

Wissa is desperate to join Newcastle United this summer and was left out of Brentford’s season opener away at Nottingham Forest. Keith Andrews tasted defeat in his first game in charge, losing 3-1.

Reports had claimed that Brentford were open to selling Wissa for around £40million after the club signed Bournemouth’s Dango Ouattara for a club-record fee.

Still, the west London club were never likely to make life easy for Newcastle despite the player’s wishes to go.

They have already sold Bryan Mbeumo this summer and are naturally reluctant to lose both of their star forwards, as well as their long-serving manager in Thomas Frank, in one transfer window.

Newcastle have been expected to sign Wissa for a while now but Monday brought a rather unwelcome update.

Brentford block Yoane Wissa’s move to Newcastle United

According to talkSPORT, Brentford are unwilling to sell the 28-year-old this summer.

They would consider his exit if Newcastle bid more than £60million but the report adds that they are not likely to bid over £40million.

He only has a year left on his contract, although Brentford do have the option of extending that by another year.

The player himself is understood to believe the move will be sanctioned and Newcastle are expected to resume talks, though Brentford insist it’s much more likely the DR Congo international stays at the club this summer.

Brentford drop Yoane Wissa hint in official announcement

When Brentford announced the deal to sign Ouattara, sporting director Phil Giles appeared to drop something of a hint.

Giles, who has been linked with the job at Newcastle, namechecked Mbeumo when speaking of Brentford’s delight in signing the former Bournemouth star.

“Having sold Bryan Mbeumo, we have been looking to add an attacking player to the squad, and we think Dango is the perfect addition,” he said (via Brentford’s official website).

“It’s been well documented that there has been more change over this summer than in recent years at the club; however, I’m very confident that, in each case where a player has left us, we have managed to bring in an extremely strong replacement, and Dango is the latest example of that.”

Indeed, Giles appeared to hint that the new signing was simply Mbeumo’s replacement rather than someone who would unlock the door for Wissa to go.

It’s hard not to see the parallels with Newcastle and Alexander Isak. Even if Eddie Howe was able to bring Wissa into the Newcastle United squad, it would be as Callum Wilson’s replacement rather than Isak’s.
