It is very clear that Newcastle United need to sign a goalkeeper this summer.
It is a position that Newcastle United tried to address last summer, but failed in spectacular fashion.
Eddie Howe wanted more competition for Nick Pope, with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Giorgi Mamardashvili linked with transfers to St James’ Park.
Talk of the latter arriving was particularly exciting, while it was claimed Newcastle thought they could sign Mamardashvili from Valencia.
Instead, Mamardashvili joined Liverpool, while Aaron Ramsdale became a Southampton player.
They have had contrasting fortunes. The Georgia international is on loan at Valencia but will eventually become Liverpool’s number one, while the former Arsenal stopper is preparing for the third relegation of his career.

Former Newcastle United target set to be available
While Ramsdale has done well since his £25million move to Southampton, it is not going to be enough to keep them in the Premier League.
That could result in another transfer for Ramsdale, with TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey telling Geordie Boot Boys that the England international is likely to leave St Mary’s when the summer transfer window opens.
That could present the Magpies with an opportunity, as Ramsdale is a player who Eddie Howe likes after working with him at Bournemouth and targeting him last summer. It also comes at a time when Newcastle United are going to bolster their goalkeeping ranks.
Newcastle United’s James Trafford deal played down
It remains to be seen if Newcastle will reignite their interest in Ramsdale. In truth, there are probably other options that Paul Mitchell would prefer to pursue.
At this moment in time, 22-year-old Burnley stopper James Trafford feels like the most likely goalkeeper to arrive at St James’ Park. There have even been claims that Newcastle expect to sign Trafford.
However, Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that talk of Newcastle already having a deal in place to sign Trafford is being played down by sources.
For now, Eddie Howe must work with what he has got. He recently restored Nick Pope to the starting XI, replacing Martin Dubravka after a lengthy stint in the side.
Fans are unsure about that decision, with Pope struggling to re-find his form.
