Newcastle United face competition in the race to sign John McGinn from Aston Villa.

Eddie Howe wants to sign a midfielder after losing Sean Longstaff, and could look to add even more Premier League experience to his Newcastle United squad.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle have enquired about John McGinn, who is one of three Aston Villa players that the Magpies are looking at. The other two are Jacob Ramsey and Ollie Watkins.

When it comes to McGinn, there is clear competition for the Scotland international.

Newcastle United discover £18m is not enough to sign John McGinn

Newcastle United are not the only club that are trying to sign McGinn, with David Moyes’ Everton also intending to strike a deal.

They have made the first move, with Sky Sports News reporting that the Toffees have proposed a deal worth £18million to bring McGinn to Merseyside.

However, the offer has been rejected by Aston Villa.

The message has been sent to Newcastle United. If they want to sign McGinn, they are going to have to pay more than £18million.

That should not come as a major surprise, as the 30-year-old is extremely valuable to Unai Emery’s side.

Aston Villa’s stance on selling John McGinn

In fact, he is so valuable that Villa do not plan to let him leave.

Sky Sports add that Villa’s stance on McGinn is that he is not for sale this summer.

That theory could be put to the test if Newcastle submit an offer of their own, but it will need to be well over the £18million proposal that Everton put on the table.

It is a similar story with Watkins, who the Magpies are also looking to sign. Villa do not want to sell Watkins either, despite the 29-year-old being seen as an ideal replacement for Alexander Isak.

He is another player who has been branded ‘not for sale’, yet the reality is that Isak wants to leave Newcastle and could still get his wish.
