Newcastle United are set to miss out on Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who has opted to join Chelsea this summer.
The Magpies are looking for a striker to replace the potentially outgoing Callum Wilson and give them a much better option if Alexander Isak is ever unavailable.
Newcastle United are now in a position where they need to strengthen their options ahead of their return to the Champions League next season. Eddie Howe has stressed to Newcastle executives that the club need to bring new players in this summer and that transfer business needs to be done early.
The last time Newcastle were in the Champions League, it was hampered by injuries and a squad that lacked experience in the competition. Now, the club has the opportunity to build a squad that can compete in Europe’s top competition.
Newcastle will have to do it without Liam Delap, who has opted to join Chelsea over the Magpies. Reports stated Delap chose Chelsea due to assurances of game time, something Newcastle were not able to offer.
With Newcastle now looking for other options, fans believe Howe could sign one player who has been linked with a move to the Magpies this summer.

Newcastle United fans wouldn’t mind signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled for form this season and has lost his place in the starting XI to Beto since David Moyes’ arrival.
The England international only managed to score three times this season, despite making 26 appearances. Calvert-Lewin is out of contract at the end of the season, and Newcastle have previously been keen on signing him.
Calvert-Lewin is open to a move to Newcastle, and Toon fans feel the exact same way.
A post on X stated that they suggested signing Calvert-Lewin would be a disappointment based on who has been linked, but many Newcastle fans are in complete disagreement.
“Fitness aside, but wasn’t that game on Sunday akin for something different up top that we don’t have against defensive teams like DLC’s strength and a salmon leap?” said one fan, while another added: “Fine by me if we’re keeping our powder dry for other (bigger) signings.”
This fan cited Newcastle’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, saying: “If we signed Mbeumo too I’d be quite comfortable with that. DCL is a better backup option than the version of Callum Wilson that exists today.”
“He’ll be a canny signing.” said this optimistic Newcastle fan
Another fan added: “DCL If it’s a free then it’s a no-brainer dress up money for other signings give us a back up extra England international striker with link up play with Gordon from Everton days and he is not needed for every game of season rotate with Osula and don’t see an issue.”
Finally, this fan said: “Howe will get a tune out of him. If we can get him back to the player he looked around 3 or 4 years ago, it’ll be a decent bit of business on a free.”
Newcastle United have a problem with striker recruitment
After losing Delap, it is obvious what the problem is at Newcastle when it comes to signing strikers.
Newcastle’s forward targets do not want to be the second choice to Alexander Isak. The Swede had another sensational season, scoring 23 Premier League goals and does not look like he will lose his spot in the team any time soon.
That means any striker who signs for the Magpies this summer will have to be the second choice behind Isak and must wait for their opportunity to break into the starting XI.
However, Calvert-Lewin’s recent form and injury problems make him a good candidate for the role of second choice striker.
Additionally, Newcastle have William Osula at their disposal. The young attacker has shown promise in his first season for the Magpies, but Howe does not fully trust Osula in big games, making him less likely to play in the Champions League next season.
