Newcastle United may need to break the bank to sign Liam Delap.

The Magpies are aiming to strike a deal for the Ipswich Town striker, with Newcastle believing Delap can play with Alexander Isak.

Eddie Howe wants the 22-year-old to add more competition to his forward line, and the fact he is available for £30million makes him even more appealing.

Delap’s next club could be decided quickly, with the attacker eager to move somewhere that he can play European football.

Newcastle United will be able to offer him that, with a Europa Conference League playoff already guaranteed. The Magpies could do even better, as they aim to qualify for the Champions League.

Liam Delap’s wage demands

Chelsea and Manchester United are also interested in Liam Delap, but it is Newcastle who are in the strongest position to offer him Champions League football.

However, his wage demands could prove to be a stumbling block.

According to the Chronicle, Delap is looking to earn between £120,000-a-week and £150,000-a-week at his next club.

A deal worth £150,000-a-week would make him one of Newcastle’s highest earners, earning almost the same amount as Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle United’s failed pursuit of Jesse Lingard

Shortly after they were taken over, Newcastle tried to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.

Unfortunately for the Magpies, Man United priced Lingard out of a January move to Tyneside.

However, Newcastle reignited their interest in Lingard in the summer of 2022. He was available on a free transfer, and was seen as an ideal addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

That changed when Lingard’s wage demands became apparent. It was reported that the midfielder was looking for a deal worth up to £200,000-a-week, which understandably put Newcastle United off.

Fast forward to 2025, and it will be interesting to see what kind of impact Delap’s apparent wage demands have on Newcastle United’s pursuit.
