Newcastle United need to sort out their goalkeeper situation in 2025.
It all got a bit messy in 2024, with Newcastle United failing to sign Nick Pope’s future replacement.
Newcastle wanted to sign James Trafford, but that deal collapsed once Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived from Nottingham Forest. And that deal, costing £20million, was only done for PSR reasons.
All the while, Martin Dubravka almost left this month. However, it looks like Newcastle will now keep Dubravka until the end of the season. That is when his contract expires.
When the summer arrives, Newcastle ideally need to sign a younger goalkeeper who can compete with Pope before replacing him when the time is right. It is claimed that Newcastle could target Trafford again, which is not a surprise.
Newcastle United eye Parma goalkeeper
However, he is not the only stopper who Paul Mitchell has an eye on.
That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle United are tracking Zion Suzuki at Parma.
“Keep an eye on this boy, he is special,” he said.
“Another potential goalkeeper star from Parma, following on from Gianluigi Buffon.
“He is an American born Japan international. He’s got everything about him. He turned Manchester United down in 2023 to be their number two. They got Bayindir instead.
“Parma do not want to let him go, and already value him at £50million.
“The clubs that are potentially in the market for a goalkeeper this summer, namely Chelsea, Newcastle and Manchester City, are all keeping a close eye on him. He is potentially a special talent. Parma know what they have got.”
Zion Suzuki is surely too expensive for Newcastle United
While Zion Suzuki is a tremendous talent at the age of 22-years-old, it would be a major surprise if Newcastle United spent £50million on a goalkeeper this summer.
That would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever, in a summer that should see the Magpies also bring in a centre-back, a right winger and possibly a striker too.
While it could be argued that Suzuki is a worthwhile investment given his age and the longevity that goalkeepers have, it feels unlikely that the Magpies will have that much cash to splash in the summer.
A move for Trafford feels much more likely, after Newcastle failed to sign him for around £20million in 2024.
