Newcastle United have had a mentality change regarding transfers in the last six months.
A lot of the change at Newcastle comes down to sporting director Paul Mitchell. He joined the club during a period of change. Amanda Staveley and Merhdad Ghodoussi were leaving Newcastle after the failures during the summer transfer window.
Newcastle’s lucrative spending in the previous seasons had put them in a bad position with PSR. As a result, the club had to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Premier League rivals.
Toon boss Eddie Howe has made do with what he has this season and has done well in the circumstances. With Mitchell now fully settled into his role on Tyneside, he has overhauled Newcastle’s transfer strategy.
Mitchell wants Newcastle to recruit youth from overseas to find hidden gems for significantly less than what they paid for the likes of Sandro Tonali or club record signing Alexander Isak.
Business has been done in January – for Newcastle’s academy rather than the first team. Kyle Fitzgerald will join Newcastle before the deadline.
With Mitchell’s new strategy in place, Newcastle have been deemed as a potential suitor for a young Danish striker who plays in Portugal.

Newcastle a possible landing spot for Conrad Harder
Sporting Lisbon forward Conrad Harder is having a steady season in Liga Portugal after joining from FC Nordsjaelland in September 2024.
So far this season the Dane has made 14 league appearances, scoring three goals and bagging two assists.
According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle is a possible landing spot for Harder in the near future. If they were to sign him in January, they would not be able to use him until the end of the season as he has already played for two clubs this campaign.
At 19, Harder has already made several Champions League appearances and is playing consistent football each week in a competitive league.
What is most impressive about Harder is his volume – the 19-year-old averages 5.19 shots per 90 minutes, more than Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi and only slightly lower than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Newcastle will need another attacker in the summer. Callum Wilson is one of several players out of contract at the end of the season.
Newcastle could land two more Scandinavian stars
Newcastle’s youth recruitment drive has been in full swing since the takeover in 2021. The tempo has been upped upon Mitchell’s arrival.
In January, Newcastle sent a scout to watch LOSC Lille winger Hakon Arnar Haraldsson alongside Jonathan David. The 21-year-old already has 19 caps for the Icelandic national team.
The same Daily Mail report also tips Newcastle as a possible landing spot for Real Sociedad forward Orri Oskarsson. The 20-year-old has scored twice in 14 La Liga appearances so far this season and has played in four of Sociedad’s Europa League games during the campaign, scoring once.
Oskarsson was named the Icelandic Footballer of the Year in 2024 and was believed to be more highly rated than Rasmus Hojlund in FC Copenhagen’s youth setup before making the move to Spain.
