Newcastle transfer news: Why Leverkusen think Florian Wirtz will stay

Newcastle United are fans of Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz, but the Bundesliga side are seemingly confident he’s going nowhere.

It was recently reported that Newcastle admire Wirtz, who is on fire in Germany after making his recovery from a long-term knee injury.

But the playmaker is already back to his best, boasting two goals and six assists from 13 appearances this season.

He is once again one of the most in-demand players across Europe, but there is reportedly belief that he will not be moving clubs this summer.

Bayer Leverkusen think Florian Wirtz is staying put

90min have reported that Newcastle are admirers of Wirtz, alongside Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. It was even claimed in Spain that Wirtz had been seduced over a move to Barca.

But despite the incredible list of suitors and alleged, the report from 90min states that Bayer Leverkusen are confident they can keep hold of the 19-year-old this summer.

That is because he currently has a contract that does not expire until 2027 which massively protects his value. It would take an incredible fee to force Leverkusen to sell.

The report from 90min adds that Leverkusen believe next year’s Euros will help convince Wirtz to stay put, as he is currently part of Hansi Flick’s international setup. The tournament is being held in Germany, and it will be the teenager’s first chance to represent his country in a major tournament.

Newcastle deal is highly unlikely

Even if Leverkusen did anticipate Wirtz leaving the Bay Arena this summer, it would be extremely difficult to envision him moving to Newcastle United.

While we are a club on the up, he has the world’s top clubs eyeing up his signature. He is surely going to become one of the best players in the world, and will join an already established elite side when his departure is confirmed.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, Wirtz is a level above what we can probably attract right now – even if we do qualify for the Champions League.

It is no surprise that the club admire him. He is only 19, and scores and assists goals for fun. He has an extremely high ceiling, which is exactly what the Magpies are looking for.

However, the transfer fee would be astronomical, which would rule out an NUFC side that are very wary of financial fair play.

Instead, Dan Ashworth will continue to scour the globe to find the next Florian Wirtz on the cheap. That is an area of recruitment that Newcastle are looking to improve in, with the club aiming to improve their world scouting team.
