Newcastle transfer news: Why Anthony Gordon missed Everton training

Anthony Gordon has missed two days of training while Newcastle United discuss a deal with Everton to bring the 21-year-old to St James’ Park.

The winger is currently Eddie Howe’s top target, as he searches for attacking reinforcements following Chris Wood’s move to Nottingham Forest.

Gordon is reportedly interested in a move to the Magpies, and wants to make the switch before the January transfer window closes next Tuesday.

The only issue appears to be the price, with Newcastle and Everton currently unable to agree a fee for the youngster.

These talks have coincided with Gordon not training with his current employers, heightening speculation that he is going to make the move to the North East.

However, the Guardian have now provided the real reason why he has not been involved at Finch Farm over the past couple of days.

Anthony Gordon absence was planned as Newcastle talks continue

According to the Guardian, Everton have stated that Gordon’s absence from training was planned.

While it is an interesting subplot, this report suggests that Gordon not being involved in training had nothing to do with him trying to force through a move to Newcastle.

The timing is questionable, but it is not uncommon for certain players to not train on certain days. We have seen that situation with Callum Wilson, who has consistently suffered with injuries in recent years.

Another scenario could be that he was asked not to train by Everton because they are willing to sell, and an injury in training would end any talk of a move.

Sky Sports have added that Gordon is expected back in training with Everton today. Hopefully it is one of the last sessions he ever has with the Toffees, as that will mean a Toon transfer is on the cards.

Gordon is the man the Toon hierarchy want, but the clock is ticking. We are in the final week of the transfer window, and Newcastle are not going to panic and overspend.

A compromise over the price needs to be reached, but there’s no way Everton are going to get the £60million they want.
