Newcastle transfer news: Toon to make fresh Moussa Diaby bid

Newcastle United are reportedly going to make a fresh attempt to sign Moussa Diaby this summer.

Diaby was one of Newcastle‘s top targets last summer, but the Magpies were unable to prise him away from Bayer Leverkusen.

Now Dan Ashworth is going to renew the club’s interest, with PIF seemingly prepared to break the bank to bring him to St James’ Park.

Newcastle willing to break transfer record for Moussa Diaby

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are going to make a new move for Diaby after failing to sign him last summer.

The report adds that Eddie Howe’s side are prepared to break their transfer record to sign the 23-year-old Frenchman.

The current record stands at £63million, which was spent last August to bring Alexander Isak to the club from Real Sociedad. Now the Northern Echo believe that Newcastle are willing to spend even more than that to bring in a marquee arrival ahead of next season.

He was too expensive last summer

Diaby was one of Newcastle’s top targets last summer, alongside Sven Botman. The Dutchman arrived and has thrived, but Diaby remained in Germany

He was deemed too expensive for Newcastle, despite there initially being confidence that he would move to St James’ Park.

It was claimed by the Telegraph in July 2022 that the Magpies’ bid to sign Diaby was proving to be frustrating, with Leverkusen adamant that they would not sell him for less than £60million.

Now Newcastle are seemingly willing to pay even more than that to get him 12 months later.

Regardless of the fee, there is no denying that the ‘astonishing‘ Diaby is a top class attacker. He is the type of winger we need to sign this level if we are to kick on next season.

The speedster is enjoying another impressive campaign in Germany, and currently has 12 goals and seven assists. His most recent strike came in the Europa League, scoring the type goal you could see him scoring for Newcastle if he were to combine with Kieran Trippier.

Hopefully this is the year we sign Diaby, after the disappointment of last summer.
