Newcastle transfer news: Toon target Borna Sosa wants move away

Borna Sosa is reportedly a transfer target for Newcastle United, and he is keen on a move away in the near future.

The 24-year-old currently plays in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart, but is interested in a fresh challenge according to German outlet Bild.

They report that Sosa wants to take the next step in his career and join a bigger club. He could get that with Newcastle, while he also has interest from elsewhere. Bild add that Inter Milan and Atalanta are also looking at possibly signing the Croatian.

However, a move in January is not on the cards. Bild state that Sosa is not thinking about a move away at the start of next year, and would rather wait until the end of the season.

That will also suit Stuttgart, whose Sporting Director Sven Mislintat believes a January transfer ‘would not be good‘ for his club. The 50-year-old has heaped praise on Sosa, calling him a ‘quality player‘.

And he is of such quality that he is set to compete at the World Cup in Qatar.

Newcastle target Borna Sosa set to represent Croatia

Croatia have been named in World Cup Group F alongside Belgium, Canada and Morocco. And Zlatko Dalic’s squad includes Sosa.

The left-back currently has eight caps for his country, and will hope to add to that tally in the coming weeks.

If he does that and performs, it will surely increase the likelihood of him securing a transfer in 2023. It might even allow Stuttgart to increase his price tag.

Regardless, it sounds like Newcastle will be in the mix for his signature come next year. And he would add something that Eddie Howe is lacking on the left of defence.

While Matt Targett and Dan Burn are dependable left-backs, neither are particularly creative. You can never rely on them for an assist. But you can with Sosa.

He is enjoying a remarkable season in Germany, and has so far created eight goals in 13 games. That is a sensational tally for a defender.

Sosa is younger than Targett and Burn too, which could make him a long-term option for Howe going forward.

While a move might not be on the cards until next summer, he is certainly one to keep an eye on at the World Cup.
