Newcastle have spoken to Canada boss about his players amid David links

Newcastle United’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson has spoken to Canada boss John Herdman about possibly signing some of his international players.

The North American nation are set to compete at the World Cup this winter, as they prepare for their second ever appearance at the tournament.

Canada haven’t qualified for a World Cup since 1986, and are now about to make their return in Qatar. They are in Group F up against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

Herdman boasts an exciting group of players, many of whom are competing in Europe’s top leagues. Canada is starting to produce some exciting players, and Newcastle seemingly know all about them.

What John Herdman said about Newcastle

The Canada boss, who is actually from the North East, has been speaking to the Chronicle ahead of the tournament. He admitted that he has spoken to the Toon’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson in recent years about some of his players.

“I’ve had a few good conversations with the head of recruitment over the last two years around some of the Canadian players so they’re on the radar,” Herdman said.

“There’s no doubt. We had a good chat about some of the Canadian players. They’re on board, they’re aware, they’re doing their homework. They’re aware of some of those younger guys that are starting to emerge.”

Jonathan David on Newcastle’s radar

One of the most exciting members of Herdman’s squad is Jonathan David. And he is a player Newcastle certainly know about.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to St James’ Park in the past, and his name recently returned to the rumour mill.

The Chronicle claimed earlier this month that Newcastle have been scouting the Lille forward, who is one of the top scorers in France right now. He’s scored nine goals in Ligue 1 this season, which is three less than top scorer Kylian Mbappe.

It has also been claimed in France by Media Foot that Newcastle are interested in signing David in January.

Given Herdman has admitted that he has spoke to Nickson about players Newcastle are looking at, surely David has came up in conversation.

Toon scouts will certainly have a keen eye on the World Cup, and will no doubt be interested to see how David performs on the international stage. Perhaps it could be what convinces Newcastle to make a move for him in the future.
