Newcastle transfer news: Toon still making calls after Conor Gallagher blow

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘calm’ behind the scenes despite being unable to sign a midfielder on transfer deadline day so far.

The Magpies have had an infuriating final day of the window, with Eddie Howe in need of a midfielder. That is because Jonjo Shelvey is set to sign for Nottingham Forest.

His move to the City Ground leaves Newcastle light in the middle of the park, and led to interest in Conor Gallagher and Sander Berge. However, neither will seemingly arrive at St James’ Park today.

Chelsea have reportedly told Gallagher that he can’t join a rival club like Newcastle, while Berge is set to remain at Sheffield United.

The clock is ticking for Dan Ashworth to find a Shelvey replacement, but there is no sense of panic behind the scenes at St James’ Park.

Newcastle transfer search continues but club not concerned by lack of positive news

According to the Telegraph (2.32pm), Newcastle are continuing to make calls in their bid to sign a defensive midfielder before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

That suggests that the Magpies still feel like they can get someone, although the Telegraph add that the club are content to wait until the summer to get one of their top targets.

Given Newcastle’s recent transfer record, that would perhaps be wise. It might be best to wait until we can get someone who has been scouted extensively rather than panicking and bringing someone in who might not actually be a good fit.

Not signing a Shelvey replacement feels like a big risk, but we have been without him pretty much all season and managed so far. On top of that, Anthony Gordon’s arrival means that Joelinton can move back into the middle of the park.

Newcastle are still trying, but they are not panicking. There is reportedly a sense of calm behind the scenes on transfer deadline day, which is something of a rarity on Tyneside.
