Newcastle United have been linked with signing Sander Berge on transfer deadline day, but the midfielder is now going to stay at Sheffield United.

That is according to Sky Sports, who state that neither the Magpies or Fulham have had any further contact with the Blades about signing the 24-year-old this month.

The Norwegian emerged as a target for Newcastle after it transpired that Jonjo Shelvey was going to leave the club. He is set to sign for Nottingham Forest, and his impending exit has led to the Magpies scrambling to sign a replacement.

Berge has been linked with a loan move to St James’ Park, with Newcastle reportedly considering a temporary deal that included an option to buy. It was even reported that they would offer more money than Premier League rivals Fulham.

However, it now looks like neither Newcastle or Fulham will be signing Berge today.

Newcastle not signing Sander Berge

According to Sky Sports, it looks as if Berge is going to continue being a Sheffield United player. They state that Fulham are signing Sasa Lukic instead, while Newcastle’s financial fair play limitations are stopping a deal from happening.

Journalist Rob Dorsett has tweeted about Berge’s future, writing: “No contact in last 24hrs from #Fulham or #nufc for #sufc Sander Berge, I’m told. Looks like he’ll remain at Bramall Lane.”

That is a blow for Eddie Howe, who now looks set to miss out on signing a replacement for Shelvey. Conor Gallagher was another option, but he has reportedly been told by Chelsea that he is not allowed to move to St James’ Park on loan.

Now a deal for Berge appears to be off too, which is a major disappointment. He has previously been called a ‘complete‘ midfielder by former Blades boss Chris Wilder, and could have been a good addition to Newcastle’s Champions League chasing squad.

But there have seemingly been no deadline day talks, and Berge is set to stay at Bramall Lane.
