Newcastle United are reportedly set to accelerate their interest in signing Ivan Fresneda from Real Valladolid during the January transfer window.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who state that the Magpies are now planning to step up their bid to bring the 18-year-old to St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe is currently in the market for a right-back, as he looks to bring in a new deputy for Kieran Trippier. The club are also looking for someone who can eventually replace the England international.

Fresneda appears to have been identified as the ideal candidate, and his manager Pacheta believes that he would be a ‘fantastic‘ acquisition for any club.

There were reports earlier in the window that he was closing in on a move to Tyneside. However, those claims appear to have been premature. But Fresneda continues to be linked with a Toon transfer.

The Daily Mail state that the Spanish youngster’s agent was in London this weekend, and is anticipating a bid for his client.

Hopefully one from Dan Ashworth is on the horizon, as it is very clear that Newcastle need more cover on the right of defence.

At the moment, Newcastle do not need a first-team right-back. We have arguably the best we have ever had in Kieran Trippier.

The 32-year-old is playing out of his skin this season, and proving to be an outrageously good buy at £12million.

But we do need to look to the future. That is why the 18-year-old Fresneda is being targeted. He is reportedly interested in a move, and is seen as someone who can learn and develop alongside Trippier.

The England international’s current backup is Javi Manquillo. While he has previously done a job, he has barely had a look in since Howe became manager. The Spaniard is not at the same level as he previously was, and there would be concern if he suddenly had to play.

That could soon become a reality, as Trippier is currently one booking away from a suspension. That is a major concern with the League Cup semi final with Southampton just over a week away.

Therefore, it is vital we step up our bid for Fresneda. He will provide more competition, and could need to be called upon shortly after his arrival. His presence could even force Manquillo to raise his levels, as he currently knows that he faces no competition as Trippier’s understudy right now.

Newcastle are keen on Fresneda, and the Daily Mail believe that progress on his arrival could soon be on the horizon.
