Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Ivan Fresneda during the summer transfer window. Now the teenager could be on the Magpies’ radar once again this summer.
Fresneda was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle at the start of the year, with Eddie Howe keen to bring in a young right-back.
The Toon boss wanted someone who could act as deputy to Kieran Trippier, learning from the England international before eventually replacing him in the future.
18-year-old Ivan Fresneda appeared to be an ideal candidate, with clubs all over Europe targeting the young Spaniard. Borussia Dortmund were keen, as were Arsenal. Newcastle were also in the mix, with a report claiming that he was open to a move to St James’ Park.
But no move came to fruition, with the ‘fantastic‘ defender remaining with Real Valladolid. Now his future is up in the air again, and it appears that Newcastle are taking a second look.

Newcastle scouted Ivan Fresneda on Thursday night
While Newcastle United were playing against Everton, there were Toon scouts watching Fresneda in Spain, according to 90min.
They claim that representatives from Newcastle, Arsenal and Aston Villa were in attendance to see Real Valladolid face Valencia. Fresneda played the full 90 minutes, with his side losing 2-1 due to a 93rd minute goal from Javier Guerra.
It is interesting to hear that the Magpies are still taking an interest in Fresneda, as they were able to sign an alternative right-back in January.
Harrison Ashby arrived in January after Fresneda interest
While Fresnda did not arrive at St James’ Park, Harrison Ashby did. He joined from West Ham, and has looked impressive during his limited appearances for the Under-21s.
Ashby has struggled with injury since signing for the club, but is now starting to get minutes at youth level. He scored and got an assist in his first appearance, which is hopefully a sign of things to come.
But he could soon have more competition, with Fresneda seemingly still a player of interest to the Toon recruitment team.
