Newcastle United are reportedly still keen to swoop for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio, despite the player reportedly signing a new contract.

Calciomercato have reportedly the Magpies remain interested in the 20-year-old centre-half.

Newcastle actually reportedly made a £25 million bid for Inacio during the January transfer window.

As Magpies fans well know, the struggle to bring in new centre-backs was very real.

Many, many names were linked with the club. Sven Botman and Diego Carlos were perhaps the two players mentioned the most.

In the end, only Dan Burn arrived from Brighton in a £13 million deal. And so far, he has been excellent for Eddie Howe.

Inacio – who won the league title with Sporting last season – was also apparently on Newcastle’s radar (Desporto Ao Minuto), but nothing materialised.

And if Newcastle want to go back in for him this summer, they might have to fork out a large sum to get him.

Sporting are yet to officially announce the Portugal U21 international has penned a new contract.

But Fabrizio Romano has reported an agreement has been reached and official word should arrive in the coming days.

The journalist also mentions that Newcastle were among the clubs interested in him in January.

Goncalo Inacio to Newcastle could still be on, with several Magpies facing exits

There is every chance Newcastle will still be able to land Inacio.

It seems the club are not put off by him signing a new contract. Which apparently includes a £37.5m release clause.

Emil Krafth, Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett could all be moving on to pastures news this summer.

Fabian Schar is also out of contract, although there have been reports he’s in line for an extension.
