Newcastle United are in contact with Tottenham Hotspur about taking Dele Alli on loan.

TEAMtalk are reporting the Magpies have made enquiries about the 25-year-old. The club have ‘made it clear’ they are keen to take the player on a temporary basis.

Apparently, Newcastle want a clause inserted that would allow them to purchase Dele should they survive relegation.

Right now, of course, the picture is looking worrying.

Newcastle sit 19th in the table, and Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Leicester City means the club now have the worst defensive record in the division.

Undoubtedly, player recruitment in January is a must. It is paramount that a few new defenders come in, but Eddie Howe could also do with another midfielder and another striker.

Dele has loosely been linked with Newcastle before.

But talk seems to be picking up now, as the winter window approaches.

The two-time former PFA Young Player of the Year is way down the pecking order at Spurs right now.

Since Mauricio Pochettino left his form has dipped in an alarming way.

He needs a change of scenery, and it remains to be seen if he’ll be pitching up at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle landing Dele Alli from Tottenham would be a big risk even on loan

So it looks as though Newcastle could sign a second player on loan from Tottenham in the space of two years, after Danny Rose joined in January 2020.

It would undoubtedly be a huge risk to sign Dele next month.

People will make the argument that a change of scenery is what he needs.

That is probably true, but the threat of relegation is huge. Maybe Dele would come hungry and feeling he has a point to prove.

But it’s been a long time now since he played well. Any sub-par showings would invite immediate pressure.

Certainly, someone like Jesse Lingard would be a smarter option, after he proved himself at West Ham United last season.
