Everton are a mess right now, and things could get even worse for them if Anthony Gordon leaves to join Newcastle United.
The Magpies are interested in signing the 21-year-old winger, having failed to land him during the summer transfer window.
But with Eddie Howe in need of a forward after Chris Wood’s departure, Gordon is back on Newcastle’s transfer radar.
He looks like the most likely arrival at St James’ Park right now, and a new report from the Northern Echo states that Newcastle hope they now have an even better chance of signing the Scouser.
Newcastle hope their chances of signing Anthony Gordon have now improved
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are going to make a move for Gordon between now and the end of the transfer window next Tuesday.
The report states that Toon officials are convinced by Gordon’s ability, and think he is one of the most exciting talents in England today.
Another man who was convinced by Gordon’s ability was former Toon boss Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard made him a first-team regular at Everton last season, and described him as ‘explosive‘. Now he could be on his way to play for Benitez’s former club.
Not only are Newcastle convinced that Gordon is a great player, but they are also hoping that they now have a better chance of signing him after Frank Lampard was relieved of his duties at Goodison Park, according to the Northern Echo.
The former Chelsea midfielder had been keen to keep Gordon around, but his departure could now make it easier for the youngster to leave.
Gordon thanks Frank Lampard after Everton exit
In the aftermath of Lampard’s sacking, Gordon has paid tribute via his official Instagram account.
The attacker posted about Lampard on his story, writing: “To the gaffer and his staff, thank you for everything. I had a personal relationship with every one of you and it was pleasure to learn from you all. I appreciate the time you put in to helping me grow as a player and a person. Good luck.”
Gordon was clearly very fond of Lampard based on the heartfelt message he has posted about the now former Toffees boss. But he is also a fan of Eddie Howe.
The Chronicle have claimed that Gordon has been impressed by the Toon manager’s impact at St James’ Park. Hopefully that is another factor that will make this deal more likely.
While he is not a popular player among Toon fans, club officials clearly see something special in him. Dan Ashworth is a fan, and he rarely misses in the transfer window. Our recruitment has been excellent over the past year, and we must trust that will continue if Gordon arrives in the next seven days.
