Newcastle United could make a move for Fabian Ruiz this summer, after already being turned down by the player last month.

The Magpies did sign one central midfield player in January in the form of Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian was ultimately the marquee addition for Eddie Howe.

Fans are buzzing to see what he can bring for the club; so far, he’s only made a couple of late cameo appearances against Everton and Aston Villa.

Interestingly, Newcastle supposedly also tried to land another silky midfielder during the winter window.

Apparently the club wanted Spain international Ruiz from Napoli. But it was a seemingly a non-starter, despite the fact the player is out of contract next summer.

Talks over a potential extension have stalled, meaning Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis will be forced to listen to offers this summer.

Calciomercato report Arsenal and Manchester United are also watching the situation.

Newcastle could also go back in for Ruiz, but it seems a move to St. James’ Park would be unlikely.

Supposedly the player’s preference is to make a return to Spain to sign for either Real Madrid or Barcelona. That certainly complicates matters.

Newcastle may have to finish 2021/22 with a flourish to attract Fabian Ruiz to St. James’ Park

The situation with Ruiz’s contract means interest in him will be plentiful this season. Presumin, of course, there’s no agreement to extend before then.

Calciomercato note in their report that the 25-year-old has recently returned to ‘extraordinary levels of performance’ under Luciano Spalletti.

It is understandable that there are already clubs keeping an eye on proceedings.

Merely staying in the Premier League might not be enough for Newcastle if they do plan to make a move for Ruiz. It might be that the Magpies need to finish with a flourish to come across as a more attractive option.

The lure of Barca and Real will always be huge for most Spanish players, so Newcastle are already up against it.
