Reported Newcastle United target Timo Werner wants to leave Chelsea, after struggling to improve with the Blues.

The Germany international has endured a tough couple of years so far at Stamford Bridge following his move there from RB Leipzig.

Werner arrived in the Premier League with an exciting reputation.

But the 26-year-old has found it hard to replicate the form he showed in the Bundesliga.

In 80 Blues appearances, he’s scored 19 goals and made 19 assists.

Given what the club paid, it was expected his numbers would be better.

Now, Sport1 have claimed that Werner is ready to bring an end to his spell in west London, and Chelsea would not stand in his way if they received an offer of at least £33 million.

He is under contract with the club until 2025. But Chelsea seemingly feel happy to take a hit on what they initially paid (around £47.5 million).

Werner actually spoke about his future after Germany’s 2-0 win over Israel, in which he scored. He said (via talkSPORT): “Things aren’t going the way I’d like at Chelsea, so it’s all the better that things are going well here [with Germany] under Hansi Flick.

“There are differences in the style of play between football at Chelsea and here. Maybe the one at the national team suits me better.”

Werner was actually linked with a move to Newcastle shortly after the takeover went through.

Head of Football at Sport Bild Christian Falk reported that the Magpies had interest in Werner.

No move was forthcoming in January, but perhaps he is someone the club might look at in the summer.

£33 million would be a lot to pay, but Werner might be worth it for Newcastle

£33 million would still be quite a big chunk to pay for a player who still hasn’t properly found his feet in England after almost two years.

That said, it’s hard bet against Werner enjoying a new lease of life at St. James’ Park. He could well be another player that responds really well to Eddie Howe.

Obviously right now, Chelsea are sanctioned and can’t buy or sell players.

It is unclear how long the club will be dealing with that.

But if the Blues can operate in the transfer market this summer as normal, then maybe Newcastle should consider a potential swoop for Werner.
