Newcastle reportedly want to sign Sven Botman from Lille in the January transfer window.
The Dutchman was first linked with Eddie Howe’s side last week, when the Athletic claimed that the Magpies were keen.
That claim was backed up by the Daily Mail, who also named Botman as a Newcastle target for January.
It will be a difficult deal to do, considering how highly rated he is. The centre-back currently plays for Lille, who qualified for the next stage of the Champions League a few days ago.
He could reportedly cost around £40million, which would make him one of Newcastle’s biggest ever transfers.
When talk of Botman to Newcastle first emerged, we looked at how impressive an alternative he’d be to James Tarkowski. But it turns out he might not be an alternative at all.
Is Sven Botman Newcastle’s number one transfer target?
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has tweeted about the Toon, and given a small update on their pursuit of the 21-year-old.
He wrote: “Newcastle are seriously interested in signing Sven Botman in January. He’s top of the list – but still waiting to know Lille position/price tag. AC Milan are keeping tabs on Botman situation too.”
The key words are ‘top of the list’. And based on all the rumours, it could be a long list.
Newcastle have been linked with a relentless amount of players over the past couple of months. But the main thing they need is defenders. Not star power or high profile signings – solid centre-backs who can tighten up a leaky defence.
Our woes were exposed again on Sunday, suffering our heaviest defeat of the season so far. Howe’s side lost 4-0 at Leicester, with our defensive deficiencies on show once again for the world to see.
The problem is staring Howe in the face, but he’s being forced to wait until January to fix it.
Botman would be an exceptional signing. He’s got incredible potential, and could be a leading Premier League defender for years to come.
While he might be expensive, he’d be a signing with both short-term and long-term implications.
