Newcastle United are reportedly now confident of signing Kieran Trippier next month.
The full-back is seen as the priority target for the Magpies, who are desperately in need of reinforcements.
Following last weekend’s 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Leciester City, the spotlight is back on Newcastle’s defence and how porous it is.
No side in the Premier League has conceded more goals.
The situation is very precarious, and a further tough few weeks could be in store looking at the fixture list.
Newcastle need to be busy next month, and it looks as though England international Trippier might be one of the first names through the door.
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are confident of sealing a deal.
They claim the club are willing to pay in excess of £30 million for the 31-year-old.
Newcastle will supposedly offer him around £150,000-a-week, which would see him become the best-paid player in the club’s history.
Furthermore, Trippier will also be able to include a clause that would allow him to leave the club for a certain fee in any case of relegation.
One would imagine inserting such clauses for new signings might be common next month.
Top players coming in would surely want to have a bit of insurance.

Trippier to Newcastle has been a link for a while now and it does not seem to be going away.
If the club can pull it off then it would be a great move.
The star is obviously hugely experienced, and has massively improved the defensive side of his game working with Diego Simeone. He also, of course, has superb set-piece ability.
He’s an England international, and also won La Liga last season.
Newcastle need quality players who can come in and make an immediate impact. Trippier would certainly fall into that category.
