According to Guillem Balague, Newcastle United’s new owners want to sign Kieran Trippier.

Speaking on BBC’s Football Daily podcast, the Spanish football expert said that the club have already ‘started negotiations’ with the defender’s representatives.

Trippier would be a huge signing for Newcastle – a player who would walk into our starting XI.

The 31-year-old is a solid defender and has a wealth of experience under his belt. He’s worked with some of the best managers in Europe today, including Mauricio Pochettino and Diego Simeone.

Bringing him to St James’ Park would be a real coup, and he’d give us something we haven’t had since Yohan Cabaye left the club in January 2014.

Kieran Trippier is a free kick specialist

We all remember July 11th 2018. England faced Croatia for a place in the World Cup final.

After five minutes, the Three Lions won a free kick in a dangerous position. Moments later the nation erupted as Kieran Trippier put England 1-0 up.

Sadly they didn’t hold on, but Trippier’s set piece will live long in the memory. And it’s skill that really makes the Atletico Madrid man stand out.

Trippier is a dead ball specialist. His set piece ability is sensational, and we’ve seen at club and international level how deadly he can be with a free-kick.

And it’s a skill that Newcastle haven’t been able to utilise for years. Right now, the Magpies don’t have anyone they can rely on when it comes to set pieces.

The last time Newcastle had a true set piece expert was the Alan Pardew era.

First there was Ryan Taylor, although his impact was limited due to injury. Then there was Yohan Cabaye, who is Newcastle’s last set piece star who consistently featured for the Magpies.

The Frenchman had a wand of a right foot, as David de Gea found out in January 2012 when Cabaye whipped a sensational free kick into the top corner on a memorable night for the Magpies.

Although Taylor was there after Cabaye’s departure, we didn’t see much of his dead ball ability between the France international leaving in January 2014 and Taylor’s release in the summer of 2015.

Signing Trippier would give Newcastle their first set piece expert in years. He would be a sensational addition, and could help the club in defence and attack.
