Newcastle transfer news: PSV set their asking price for Cody Gakpo

Newcastle United have been linked with signing Cody Gakpo, but PSV Eindhoven’s asking price will surely put the Magpies off a move in January.

The Netherlands forward was briefly linked with a move to St James’ Park during the summer, but it was Manchester United who came closest to signing him.

But Gakpo remained at PSV, where he has been an absolute star in the Eredivisie this season. The 23-year-old currently has 30 goal contributions in all competitions, which is a staggering number.

He has taken his club form to the international stage, and is shining at the World Cup right now. Nathan Ake has certainly been impressed, calling his teammate a ‘top player‘.

Netherlands’ number right has scored three World Cup goals, and will hope for his side to reach the Semi Finals when they face Argentina in the final eight on Saturday.

Gakpo’s form is attracting plenty of attention, with Newcastle keeping an eye on him. The Chronicle have reported that the Magpies have been scouting Gakpo this season, both at PSV and the World Cup.

His performances in Qatar have shown what an excellent signing he would be, but PSV’s asking price surely makes a January move to Tyneside unlikely.

Cody Gakpo asking price will surely put Newcastle off

According to the Sun, PSV want at least £50million for Gakpo, who is still being targeted by Manchester United. The report adds that they will sell him if someone meets their asking price.

But given the amount the Dutch side want, Newcastle might not be able to challenge the Red Devils.

While the takeover has given the Magpies the financial capacity to bring big money signings to St James’ Park, the club are not planning to splash the cash in January according to reports.

For me, a £50million move for Gakpo would be classed as ‘splashing the cash’, so a Toon transfer feels incredibly unlikely.

Eddie Howe’s side have already spent big money on a couple of players this season. Sven Botman arrived for £35million then they broke the club’s transfer record to sign Alexander Isak for £63million.

If we were heading into the summer, a move for Gakpo would be a much greater possibility. At £50million, we would be able to compete with Manchester United for his signature.

But that probably won’t be possible in January, meaning Newcastle may now miss out on one of Europe’s most in-form attackers.
