Newcastle transfer news: Magpies watching PSV's Cody Gakpo

Newcastle United are reportedly keeping an eye on Cody Gakpo as the end of the transfer window edges closer.

That’s according to 90min, who claim that the Magpies are keeping tabs on the Dutch winger.

The PSV Eindhoven star is attracting a lot of interest from Premier League clubs, most notably Manchester United. Erik ten Hag has previously competed against Gakpo in the Eredivisie, and now wants to work with him at Old Trafford.

However, he has competition from various other top flight clubs. 90min state that Southampton have made a move for the 23-year-old, while Nottingham Forest previously had an offer rejected.

It appears that Premier League clubs are queuing up to sign Gakpo before deadline day, but will Newcastle be one of them? If so, they better be ready to splash the cash again.

How much PSV want for Cody Gakpo as Newcastle watch on

The Magpies have broke the bank in the past week. Alexander Isak arrived for a club record fee, costing an initial £59million.

While Gakpo won’t cost that much, the fee PSV want would make him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever. According to 90min, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side want £42.7million for the Netherlands international.

Eddie Howe is still looking for someone who can play out wide, and Gakpo is a right-footed player who loves coming inside off of the left. He’s also handy in front of goal, scoring 21 times for PSV in all competitions last season.

The Dutchman has started this season in fine form too, already finding the net four times in eight appearances. On top of that, he has six assists too.

Those kind of numbers will appeal to Newcastle, who are looking for ways to score more goals. Our attacking exploits were limp against Wolves until Allan Saint-Maximin came out of nowhere with a wondergoal.

The Magpies need another spark in attack, and Gakpo would certainly provide that. He’s been described as a player who ‘has everything‘.

While that does sound appealing, competition from others and a lofty price tag might put him out of reach for Newcastle this late in the window.
