Newcastle United want to sign Andrey Santos, but could now face competition from Paris Saint-Germain.
That is according to reports in France, with Le 10 Sport claiming that PSG want to sign the 18-year-old during the January transfer window.
They add that Newcastle and Barcelona already have offers ready for the Brazilian teenager, but PSG advisor Luis Campos has held talks with Santos’ representatives about a move to the French capital.
Santos has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent months. It was even claimed by 90min that the Magpies are confident they can complete a deal heading into the January transfer window.
That is yet to happen, and now PSG are entering the picture. That makes signing Santos all the more difficult, and it would be a real blow to miss out to Christophe Galtier’s side – especially after what happened during the summer.
Newcastle could have another Hugo Ekitike situation with Andrey Santos
Newcastle were desperate to sign Hugo Ekitike during the summer from Reims. However, it was a transfer saga that ended in disappointment for Dan Ashworth.
After rumours of a deal being agreed, the plug was eventually pulled on the Frenchman moving to Tyneside. Instead, he moved to Ligue 1 champions PSG, where he now shares a dressing room with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
It was massively frustrating. Ekitike was a talent that the club had identified a long time ago and invested a lot of time into. But his agent proved a nightmare to deal with, and it looks like Newcastle got away with one.
However, there is no denying Ekitike’s talent, and it was sad to lose out to PSG. Newcastle will now be hoping the same doesn’t happen with Santos.
The teenager looks and sounds like a star of the future, and Le 10 Sport have even compared him to Toon hero Bruno Guimaraes. Santos is certainly a fan of Bruno’s, and congratulated him on going to the World Cup this week.
Hopefully Santos’ admiration for Bruno can convince him to come and play alongside him at Newcastle. However, the bright lights of Paris could be difficult to ignore.
If he does go there, he can join Ekitike on the PSG bench…
