Newcastle transfer news: Manchester United make Scott McTominay decision

Newcastle United are going to have to put their interest in Manchester United’s Scott McTominay on hold until the summer.

That is because the Athletic claim that the Red Devils have no interest in selling him during the January transfer window.

After being linked with a move to St James’ Park at the start of the season, McTominay is back on Newcastle’s radar this month. Eddie Howe is keen to bring in a midfielder, and the 26-year-old is a player he admires.

The Athletic state that McTominay, who has previously been called ‘brilliant‘, would be a key player in black and white if he did join. Howe admires his athleticism and his ability to carry the ball.

But for all his admiration, it is not going to result in the Scotland international wearing a Newcastle shirt in the immediate future. That will disappoint McTominay, as it was recently reported that he is open to a move to Tyneside.

Newcastle could revisit Scott McTominay interest

McTominay’s future at Old Trafford has been uncertain at Old Trafford since the arrival of Casemiro. The Brazilian midfielder has taken the academy graduate’s place, leading to limited Premier League minutes for McTominay.

He did play in the defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, with Casemiro suspended. And Erik ten Hag reportedly still considers McTominay to be a valuable member of his squad.

That could change at the end of the season, and the Athletic state that Newcastle will reevaluate their interest when the summer transfer window opens.

Whether or not they make a fresh move will largely depend on if Dan Ashworth is able to sign a midfielder this month. That is what the club are looking to do, with the likes of Youri Tielemans and Moises Caicedeo linked.

However, finances could make a deal difficult, forcing Newcastle to wait until the summer. That would not be ideal for Howe, who is keen to add further recruits to boost his side’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League. A forward is also being targeted after Chris Wood joined Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle are third after 20 games, and sit above Manchester United on goal difference. They extended their unbeaten run to 15 games after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.
