Newcastle United have recently been to scout Martin Terrier and are interested in potentially signing the Rennes forward.
That is according to 90min, who believe that a plethora of Premier League clubs are keen to snap up the 25-year-old when the transfer window opens in January.
They claim that representatives from Arsenal, Manchester United, Leeds, Leicester, Wolves and Aston Villa have all been to France to watch Terrier in the past two weeks – as well the Magpies.
Whoever was in attendance will have been impressed with what they saw, as Terrier is having a season to remember.
The Frenchman currently has 11 goals and four assists from 18 appearances in all competitions, and was recently called ‘formidable‘ by manager Bruno Genesio.
His form has got Rennes sitting third in the Ligue 1 table. They are currently in the mix to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Terrier is really turning heads with his performances, and could now be on his way to the Premier League in January.
90min add that he will cost more than £30million, but he could be worth the money if he can take his form from France over to England. However, he could already be in the Premier League had things gone differently.
Newcastle were interested in Terrier during the summer
Eddie Howe was desperate for attacking reinforcements during the summer, with extra depth needed given Callum Wilson’s worrying fitness record.
In the end, the Magpies brought in top target Alexander Isak for a club record fee. However, before that deal was possible there was talk of Terrier turning up on Tyneside.
According to L’Equipe, Newcastle were willing to spend big to bring him to St James’ Park. They claimed that the Toon owners were happy to pay Rennes more than £38million for their star forward.
However, he decided to stay put, signing a new deal with the Ligue 1 side.
But now he could be on the move again, and Newcastle are once again interested. He would be a welcome addition to Howe’s squad, which certainly needs more depth in attack.
While we are doing well at the moment, we could do with another option in the final third. Terrier would provide that, and is capable of playing either through the middle or out wide.
If he did sign, he would join a long list of Frenchman to play for Newcastle. And he would also be reunited with Bruno Guimaraes.
The pair briefly shared a dressing room at Lyon in 2020, but didn’t spend long in the same team. Bruno joined that January, but football was postponed due to COVID in March. When Lyon returned to action in the Champions League that summer, Terrier had already moved to Rennes.
But now there is speculation that they could play together again, at a time when they are both playing exceptional football. Bruno is shining in the Premier League, and Newcastle must think Terrier can do the same if they are interested in signing him.
However, there is a lot of competition for his signature.
