Newcastle United are reportedly showing interest in Lens forward Ignatius Ganago.
L’Equipe (via GFFN) have claimed today that the Magpies are eyeing a swoop for the star, who is currently on duty with Cameroon at AFCON.
The club signed Chris Wood from Burnley last week.
The striker joined for around £25 million after Newcastle triggered his release clause.
It is hoped he can help cover the injury absence of Callum Wilson.
But Newcastle would like another striker in moving fowards, and it looks as though Ganago could be someone they fancy.
Newcastle continue to be linked with a move for ‘the next Kylian Mbappe’ Hugo Ekitike. But Chelsea are also keen on him (Foot Mercato), potentially complicating things for the Magpies.
Gangago has three goals in 16 appearances in Ligue 1 this season.
Lens are enjoying a fantastic campaign, and could very well challenge for a European finish the way they are going. They currently sit sixth in the table.
It is perhaps for that reason that manager Franck Haise doesn’t particularly want to sell Ganago.
Newcastle’s apparent interest in Ganago comes after his teammate, Seko Fofana, declared that he was happy to stay put at Lens (via Chronicle). The midfield dynamo has also reportedly been on Eddie Howe’s radar.
Ignatius Ganago might not have enough pedigree as Newcastle seek Premier League survival
Ignatius Ganago would make for a risky signing by Newcastle, who are obviously under serious threat of relegation.
He only has three goals this season, and his record in Ligue 1 reads 89 games played (for Lens and Nice), 16 goals scored.
That does not exactly scream ‘prolific’.
While the youngster may well have good potential, Newcastle can’t really be making high-risk signings at this point.
Proven goalscorers should be the priority.
Perhaps Ganago is someone for the club to look at in the summer.
