Newcastle transfer news: Magpies most likely to try to sign Matt O'Riley

Newcastle United could reportedly make a move to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic this summer.

That’s according to ESPN, who believe that the Magpies and Leicester are the two most likely sides to try and prise the midfielder away from Parkhead.

The 21-year-old joined Celtic at the start of the year from MK Dons, and has really impressed north of the border. He helped Ange Postecoglou’s side win the Scottish title last season, and is already being linked with an even bigger move.

ESPN claim that the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in signing the youngster. Borussia Dortmund are also mentioned as a possible destination – a club that has a reputation for bringing in the best young talent around.

However, it’s Newcastle that seem best placed to make a move.

Newcastle could try to sign O’Riley from Celtic

Out of all the teams that are interested, ESPN believe Newcastle and Leicester are the two most likely to make a move before the transfer window closes.

They add that while Celtic don’t want to lose O’Riley, an offer worth between £15million and £20million could tempt them into a sale.

That kind of figure might appeal to Newcastle, who are suddenly in the market for a midfielder after Jonjo Shelvey’s injury. Conor Gallagher is reportedly being pursued on loan.

But O’Riley, who has been described as ‘elegant‘, would be a more permanent solution, and a lot cheaper too. He was excellent in League One last season for MK Dons, and continued his form in the green and white of Celtic.

The former Fulham man has began the new season well, starting every game for the Hoops. They’ve won four games out of four, with O’Riley getting an assist in the season opener versus Aberdeen.

A move for O’Riley wouldn’t be met with the same kind of fanfare as the Alexander Isak bid, but the young midfielder is certainly someone with a lot of potential. He would be another signing with a view to the future, as well as having an impact on the present.

Perhaps this is one to watch for Newcastle fans in the final week of the transfer window.
