Newcastle transfer news: Magpies make move to sign Corey Smith

Newcastle United are reportedly competing with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Northern Irish teenager Corey Smith.

While all the talk is about big money arrivals at Newcastle, the Magpies continue to scour the globe for young talent that they can add to their youth setup.

It appears that they have found a real talent over the water, with both Newcastle and Wolves trying to sign Dungannon Swifts winger Corey Smith.

That is according to Belfast Live, who claim that the two Premier League clubs have made moves to sign the teenager.

The 18-year-old attacker recently netted his first senior goal for Dungannon, while he has also signed a new contract with the club. However, that might not be enough to stop him being attracted by the bright lights of the Premier League.

There is a lot of buzz around Smith, who has received praise from manager Dean Shiels. He has described him as ‘unplayable‘ when he has represented Dungannon’s Under-20s side, and tipped him to become a ‘big player’ for the club.

Newcastle Sporting Director Dan Ashworth had a great reputation of spotting young gems during his time at Brighton, and is looking to bring those talents to his new employers.

We have seen plenty of youngsters arrive at the club since his appointment last year, some of which arrived to a lot of fanfare. The most notable deal was the signing of Garang Kuol, but there was also some hype about defenders Alex Murphy and Charlie McArthur.

They are all players for the future, and Smith will join a strengthening youth side if he does make the move from Dungannon Swifts to Newcastle United.

He is proving to be unplayable at youth level in Northern Ireland, and let’s hope those skills can eventually lead to him being just as influential at senior level in the Premier League.

But that is a long way away. For now, Newcastle are competing with Wolves to win his signature, and will hope the lure of the tantalising project at St James’ Park will give them an edge.
