Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Antonee Robinson from Fulham.

That is according to TeamTalk, who claim that the Magpies and Inter Milan are both tracking the 25-year-old heading into the January transfer window.

Newcastle aren’t expected to make any major signings during January, but a move for Robinson would certainly be out of the blue.

The left-back has been with Fulham since the summer of 2020, arriving from Wigan Athletic for £2million.

He is now in his third season at Craven Cottage, where he has already experienced relegation and promotion. This season is going much better for Fulham, who are currently ninth in the Premier League.

As for Robinson, he has just been eliminated from the World Cup. The defender played every minute of every game for USA, losing in the Round of 16 to Netherlands on Saturday.

Now he is heading home, and is the subject of interest from the Premier League’s third placed team. But this isn’t the first time that Newcastle have shown an interest in him.

Steve Bruce was interested in signing Antonee Robinson for Newcastle

In January 2020, Steve Bruce was guiding the club through his second transfer window as manager. He signed Danny Rose on loan at left-back, filling the hole left by the injured Jetro Willems.

But Bruce had other plans for the following season. In February 2020, Newcastle were linked with another left-back – Wigan’s Antonee Robinson, who had just missed out on a move to AC Milan.

Newcastle, Chelsea and Aston Villa were all linked with Robinson heading into the summer of 2020, but non of that trio won the race to sign him. Instead, Robinson joined Fulham.

Fast forward more than two years and now he is being linked with a fresh move to St James’ Park, where the landscape has changed massively.

Newcastle are looking up, as Eddie Howe looks to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe. His side are doing that right now, but they continue to look for new arrivals.

So is Robinson better than what we’ve got? Howe currently has Dan Burn at left-back, while Matt Targett is currently second choice. Robinson is not a huge upgrade on either of those players – the only thing he has on his side is age, being two years younger than Targett and five years younger than Burn.

Robinson has proven himself to be a decent Premier League left-back, but probably isn’t at the required level for Newcastle right now.
