Newcastle United have reportedly discussed making a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

The Athletic have claimed the Magpies ‘have long lists for all positions and will potentially send out dozens of enquiries now’, with just one week remaining in the January transfer window.

It would seem Gueye might be on the club’s list for central midfield options.

Just recently, Newcastle’s midfield has come in for criticism for allowing teams to play through too easily.

As much as Newcastle need new centre-halves, the backline arguably needs better protection.

Gueye joined PSG back in 2019 after spending a few seasons with Everton.

He carved out a solid reputation during his time at Goodison Park as being one of the Premier League’s top ball-winners.

Since moving to PSG for around £30 million (BBC Sport), he has made 98 appearances for the French giants.

In 2021/22, he has clocked up 20 appearances across all competitions. He is seemingly a player rated quite highly by Mauricio Pochettino.

At the moment, Gueye is at AFCON with Senegal. He will next be in action against Cape Verde tomorrow in the last 16.

He is the second midfielder from PSG to be linked with Newcastle this month. Apparently former Toon star Gini Wijnaldum has also been discussed.

Idrissa Gueye to Newcastle this week feels unlikely

Idrissa Gueye completing a move to Newcastle this week would be a real surprise.

This time last year, the Daily Mail reported that Gueye actually turned down a loan move to St. James’ Park. That was despite initial positive talks.

Gueye has had a regular football at the Parc des Princes since those links.

He still has a contract with the club until 2023, and they may not want to lose the dynamo before then.

Gueye may also prefer to try and win an elusive Champions League trophy, than come and partake in a relegation battle.
