Newcastle transfer news: Belief Diego Carlos deal can be agreed

Newcastle United’s quest to complete a deal for Diego Carlos goes on and on and on.

The Brazilian defender has been linked for almost two weeks now, but there is still no agreement between the Magpies and Sevilla.

Big bids have reportedly been put on the table, with the Times claiming Newcastle have offered £28million. That would make him PIF’s biggest transfer so far.

There have been constant claims of confidence and progress being made, but still the 28-year-old remains a Sevilla player.

His side took on Real Betis in a cup derby on Sunday, with Carlos playing the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 defeat.

But while Carlos has focused on his football, transfer talks have continued with progress reportedly expected this week.

Diego Carlos keen to complete Newcastle deal

According to the Northern Echo, more talks are expected between Newcastle and Sevilla over the next 24 hours.

We desperately need a new centre-back before we face Leeds on Saturday, with our defensive deficiencies once again costing us against Watford.

Carlos is reportedly interested in joining Newcastle this month, which is why Sevilla are happy to continue talks with Amanda Staveley and co.

The Northern Echo’s report adds that after discussions this weekend, there is belief that an ‘agreement is possible’.

An agreement is essential for the Magpies, whose survival hopes took another hit at the weekend. The clash with Watford was a must-win, and Newcastle were minutes away from just that before Joao Pedro slammed home an equalising header.

It was another afternoon of defensive errors. A more prolific side would have punished us further.

While our fullbacks were decent, we are so weak in the middle.

We have to have a new centre-back in the starting XI against Leeds, and Carlos looks like the most likely at this stage. We desperately need talks to go well in the next 24 hours.
