Newcastle transfer news: Karl Darlow could get loan wish in the coming weeks

Newcastle United will reportedly let Karl Darlow leave on loan this month – but not until late in the window.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who have provided an update on the goalkeeping situation at St James’ Park.

After Martin Dubravka’s return from Manchester United, Eddie Howe now has five senior stoppers in his ranks. That is far too many, with Mark Gillespie already excluded from the 25-man Premier League squad.

The Magpies need to move someone on, and it now appears clear who it will be. It was previously reported that Dubravka is staying put, and now the Daily Mail claim that Loris Karius is going nowhere too.

His short-term contract expires this month, but he is now expected to stay in the North East and sign an extension.

That will open the door for Darlow to depart, but not right now.

Karl Darlow will be allowed to leave Newcastle this month

The Daily Mail believe that Darlow will only be allowed to leave Newcastle late in the window. His future depends on Karius staying, which now looks set to be the case. However, it is not official yet.

The report states that the Magpies also want to wait until late in the window so that they can assess Nick Pope and Martin Dubarvka’s fitness. Obviously, an injury to either could possibly force Darlow to remain at St James’ Park.

Another issue being considered is the League Cup, which Dubravka is cup-tied for.

But if Karius signs and Newcastle’s other goalkeepers avoid injury, Darlow will be granted his wish to depart.

That is what the 32-year-old wants, with the Daily Mail stating that he is keen to go out on loan and play – despite his good relationship with Toon boss Howe.

A move to the Championship feels likely for Darlow, with Huddersfield Town reportedly keen. His main priority will to be first choice somewhere, having barely featured since Howe replaced Steve Bruce.

The former Nottingham Forest keeper has made just two competitive appearances since the change of manager. Darlow started Howe’s first ever game in charge, and was also in between the sticks for this season’s Carabao Cup win over Tranmere Rovers.
