Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is reportedly the subject of interest from Bordeaux.

Journalist Alan Nixon has tweeted this morning to say that the Ligue 1 side are keen on the Switzerland international.

Schar has been a regular pick for Eddie Howe since the manager’s arrival back in early November.

The 30-year-old had often been overlooked in 2021/22 by previous manager Steve Bruce, something the player admitted he didn’t really know why.

Unfortunately, Schar’s return to the starting XI as a regular has not really made much of a difference to Newcastle defensively.

The club have kept just one clean sheet in the league all season. Only Norwich City have conceded more goals so far.

Howe recently called Schar ‘a fantastic footballer’, and was reported to hope the player signs a new contract. His current one expires at the end of the season.

But it seems there could be a chance that Schar will be sold this month.

Bordeaux, like Newcastle, are battling against relegation. They’ve actually conceded the most goals of any side in Ligue 1 so far, and appear to want to try and bolster their own backline.

Newcastle shouldn’t sell Fabian Schar to Bordeaux

He isn’t having his best season, but Newcastle should not be looking to offload Schar this month, amid reported interest from Bordeaux.

The hope is that a couple of new central defenders will join.

In an ideal world, the new players will be regulars going forwards. But Newcastle should retain Schar in the event one of the new players picks up an injury.

He is probably Newcastle’s best defender on paper.

It probably is worth keeping him until the end of the season. At the end of the day, he is an experienced player and it doesn’t make enough sense to offload him.
