Eddie Howe has sung the praises on Fabian Schar, and wants the Newcastle United defender to sign a new contract.

After struggling for minutes under the previous manager this season, Schar has featured in all three matches since Howe came in.

The Switzerland international couldn’t understand why he wasn’t featuring under Steve Bruce.

That was a feeling shared by many Magpies fans.

But he’s back in the team now, and it looks like he is there to stay.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

He has done well since he came in, and on Saturday he contributed to Newcastle’s first Premier League clean sheet of the season.

Schar extended his contract at the end of last season but that deal expires at the end of 2021/22.

Given the takeover and the likely arrival of new defenders in January, it may be that this could be Schar’s last season.

But Howe certainly doesn’t see it that way.

He said of the star: “Yeah, I think Fabian has been excellent.

“I have been an admirer of Fabian from afar for a long, long time.

“I think he’s a fantastic footballer.

“He has also shown his defensive resilience and mentality to not want to concede.

“Fabian has defended really well and of course that is every defender’s first port of call.”

Howe clearly rates Schar highly, and his comments will be nice for the player to hear.

To know that your new manager has admired you for a long time has got to be a real confidence-booster.

Schar is a fantastic footballer, as Howe says. It is just about him staying fit and being consistent. He’s a great defender, who can also pass and drive forwards to break the lines.

It remains to be seen if he’ll get that extension Howe clearly wants him to get. But he’s clearly someone Howe will be using quite a lot going forwards.
