Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is reportedly eyeing a return to the Bundesliga.
No official announcement was made on that, but he and Paul Dummett were listed as ‘extended’ on Newcastle’s retained list (via Sunderland Echo)
Apparently Schar is hoping to go back to Germany, four years after leaving Hoffenheim.
He spent two years in the country, before moving to Deportivo La Coruna in 2017.
There is no mention at this stage of any Bundesliga clubs having an interest in the 29-year-old.
To date Schar has clocked up 74 appearances for the Magpies following his £3 million transfer (ESPN).
He perhaps would have had over 100 by now had he not struggled with injuries.
Last season, he suffered with a knee issue. He also tested positive for Covid-19 around Christmas time, forcing him to miss a handful of games.
Newcastle to sell?
One wonders if it is Newcastle’s intention to sell Schar.
They may reportedly have extended his contract, but perhaps that was merely to ensure he didn’t leave for nothing.
Schar was great for Newcastle in his first couple of seasons.
Last term he struggled though, and it could be that Newcastle try to sell him and also Florian Lejeune, who has also had injury problems.
