Newcastle United may have suddenly been handed a major boost over long-term transfer target Ederson.
Eddie Howe wants Newcastle to sign a new midfielder in January, although the winter window is a notoriously difficult one from which to extract value.
Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder has long been linked with a move to St James’ Park.
Pretend you’re Eddie Howe. Which position are you begging PIF to strengthen in January?
Earlier this month, reports from iNews suggested that Newcastle are considering Ederson as a long-term replacement for Joelinton.
Joelinton, of course, remains a key player under Howe, but he’s struggled for consistency this season and the injuries are starting to get a touch more frequent.
Interestingly, there has now been some fresh movement on Ederson’s situation at Atalanta.

Ederson’s price tag at Atalanta has now dropped
Noted transfer insider Fabrizio Romano shared a fascinating update about the 26-year-old.
Reflecting on an interview the player’s agent conducted with Spanish outlet Cadena Ser earlier this month, Romano confirmed that Ederson was “putting himself on the market.”
He’s now expected to cost between €30-40million (which is around £26-£35million).
Romano also suggested that Manchester United and Barcelona were in the running.
“Now he could be available for something around €30-40million, for one of the best midfielders in Serie A” said Romano in a video posted on YouTube.
“So, Ederson puts himself on the market with his agent doing an interview. That’s a big change compared to one year ago when Man United wanted him, and several clubs were tracking him.
“Also, Barcelona have always been well informed of the situation of Ederson in recent years but they had different priorities.”
Previously, Ederson’s price tag at Atalanta was reportedly around €50million (roughly £42million).
The January transfer window will be a disaster unless Newcastle United sign a_____
Let's hear your hot takes….
Ederson has been open to signing for Newcastle United before
Back in January 2024, it was suggested that Ederson was open to signing for Newcastle United.
Clearly, almost two years is a long time in football. However, the admiration between the two looks somewhat historic.
To compete with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona, Newcastle need to be playing in the Champions League.
Even then, it’s not a guarantee. The Red Devils signed Benjamin Sesko ahead of Newcastle earlier this summer despite the fact they weren’t playing in Europe’s elite club competition.
It surely must be considered a boost that Ederson will likely be available at a cheaper rate than initially thought.
Newcastle, however, will seemingly have to beat some big competition to sign him.
