Newcastle United have not had it easy during this summer’s transfer window.

While the signings of Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos do bolster Eddie Howe’s squad somewhat, Newcastle have not had it all their own way.

Indeed, they reluctantly agreed to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton, while Howe did not want to lose Elliot Anderson before he joined Nottingham Forest.

They did also try to sign Tosin Adarabioyo too, before the former Fulham defender eventually joined Chelsea on a free transfer.

Clearly, not everything has gone to plan.

Now, another target the club were keen on signing has gone elsewhere, and to a Premier League rival no less.

Newcastle target Max Kilman joins West Ham

Newcastle are thought to have offered Anderson in part-exchange for Wolves captain, Max Kilman.

That offer, which is said to have included a payment of around £25m, was rejected.

Now, the 27-year-old has completed a move to West Ham, which the Evening Standard suggest is worth around £40m.

Interestingly, Kilman has been handed a huge seven-year deal by the Hammers, as confirmed by their official website.

Max Kilman was a long-standing target for Newcastle

It’s hard to imagine Newcastle paying such huge money before handing such a lengthy deal to Kilman.

Had they been that keen, they surely would have returned with an offer after the bid involving Anderson was rejected.

Still, that’s not to say Kilman wasn’t a target at Newcastle.

The club were being linked with a move for the defender as far back as 2022, so it certainly seems as if he has admirers at St James’ Park.

Whether or not they will live to regret not pushing harder to sign him is up for debate but it does seem clear Kilman had been under consideration at Newcastle for a while.
