Newcastle’s takeover and the wealth that comes with it means it is open season in terms of transfer gossip.

A recent report from the Spanish media has claimed Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is a potential target.

Where have these claims come from?

The report has come from Spanish outlet Sport.

They claimed that Newcastle have already made the German goalkeeper an offer.

He was apparently surprised to receive it given Newcastle are without a sporting director, and has seemingly turned it down.

Do Newcastle need a goalkeeper?

The goalkeeping position is one of the few at Newcastle which do not seem to be in need of improvement.

Martin Dubravka is number one when fit and Karl Darlow is a more than able deputy.

Of course ter Stegen is in a different league, but a new stopper is not exactly a priority in the short term.

Is there any chance of getting ter Stegen?

The report claims he has already refused the offer. Could Newcastle change his mind?

It seems unlikely, although perhaps Barcelona would be keen to explore getting some money in through the door in their current financial straits.

Ter Stegen has a 500 million euro (£420 million) release clause but obviously Newcastle would not need to pay anything near that.

Barcelona need to reduced their wage bill and balance the books before they can even register new players like Dani Alves in the January window.
