Newcastle are weighing up a bid for Lyon’s Maxwell Cornet, according to 90Min.
They report that West Ham are also considering trying to sign the 24-year-old with just a week of the window left.
Burnley have tabled a club-record bid for Cornet, and are willing to make him their highest earner.
But it’s not a done deal yet, which has left the door open for a potential late swoop for Newcastle.

The report claims Burnley are willing to pay £15 million for Cornet. Would Newcastle match that figure after signing Joe Willock?
It doesn’t seem especially likely, and there is also competition from Germany in the shape of Hertha Berlin.
Cornet is apparently a left-back these days, but has played on either wing in his career too.
He has shunned Burnley earlier this summer, and Newcastle might take advantage of that if their interest in genuine.

Record v City
Cornet has faced Manchester City three times in his career and has scored against them every time.
In the 2018/19 Champions League, Cornet netted in a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium over Pep Guardiola’s men.
He also bagged a brace in the reverse fixture in the group stage, as Lyon grabbed a 2-2 draw.
Then in August 2020, he ended City’s Champions League hopes at the semi-final stage, scoring the opening goal as Lyon stunned Guardiola’s men 3-1.
